DESCRIPTION

The Wall of Honor, a memorial located in the North Terminal of Miami International Airport, pays tribute to South Florida’s fallen Armed Forces members who have lost their lives in the War on Terror since September 11, 2001.

The Wall of Honor stands as a solemn landmark within Concourse D, a central hub of the airport where over 44 million passengers traverse annually. Composed of polished black granite, the memorial spans 51 feet and encompasses two corners, offering a reflective pause amidst the busy atmosphere of air travel.

The wall’s surface features ten rows of inscribed names, each providing a brief yet powerful glimpse into a soldier’s story: their rank, name, age, and the date and place of their death. Its surface is reflective and allows visitors to create paper impressions, or rubbings, of the names. One side of the wall displays the seals of the five U.S. military branches; on the other, an 18-minute film tribute — an ongoing project — features photos of some of the troops who died along with their families. South Florida’s fallen served in four of the military branches, 113 men and six women from a nine-county region south and east of Lake Okeechobee, from Monroe to Martin and Collier to Glades.
